Wessex Angling runs a programme of competitions throughout the year, giving local anglers the chance to get on the bank or the harbour wall, test their skills and enjoy a bit of friendly competition. From long-running league formats to individual one-off events, there’s something for anglers of all abilities to get involved with across the season.

The Wessex Flounder League
The Wessex Flounder League is one of our most popular and long-standing competitions, run through the autumn and winter months when flounder are moving into Poole Harbour in good numbers. The league runs over a series of rounds, with points accumulated across the season to determine the overall winner.
Flounder fishing in Poole Harbour is a real skill:- reading the tides, finding the right spots and presenting your bait correctly all make a big difference to how you get on. Ragworm is the go-to bait, and the harbour rewards those who put the time in to learn its channels, gutters and feeding areas. Whether you’re a regular competitor or thinking about entering for the first time, the Flounder League is a brilliant way to fish one of the most productive flounder venues on the South Coast.

The Wessex Spring Series
As winter gives way to spring and a wider variety of species start to show, the Wessex Spring Series gives anglers the chance to get back out and target whatever is running at that time of year. The series runs over multiple rounds across the spring months and is a great way to kick the season off with some competitive fishing and a sociable day out.

Individual Events
Throughout the year we also run a number of individual one-off competition events, which are a great option if you want to dip your toe in without committing to a full league. These events tend to reflect what’s in season and fishing well at the time, and they’re a good opportunity to meet other local anglers and fish some great marks around the Poole area.
